Anti-drug drive carried out in Jagraon

Ludhiana: Seeking to curb drug menace and create awareness among people about the ill-effects of drugs, Ludhiana Rural police on Wednesday carried out a search operation in various areas of Jagraon.

SSP Ludhiana Rural Varinder Singh Brar said police parties headed by inspector Nidhan Singh, SHO Jagraon city police station; inspector Kikkar Singh, SHO Sadar Jagraon police station; inspector Jagdish Kumar, in-charge CIA (Crime Investigation Agency), Jagraon; inspector Iqbal Hussain, in-charge Anti-Narcotic Cell; with their staff and police officials from Police Lines Ludhiana (Rural) and Chowki Mann police post made a complete search in Jagraon city.

He added that during this operation, Mohalla Gandhi Nagar, Ajit Nagar, Mai Jeena, Chungi No.5, and Chungi No.7 areas were searched thoroughly to nab the culprits and break the nexus of drug supply.

The police officer said an awareness campaign was also launched to make the youth stay away from drugs and say ‘no’ to them. He added people of the area were also motivated to assist the rehabilitation of drug addicts, and if required, help them approach a de-addiction centre.

The SSP said they had requested people that if any drug supplier was seen in and around their area, they should inform the police, and the person doing so would be rewarded suitably. He added that people were also apprised that anyone assisting in apprehension of the culprits would ultimately be helping make society free of drugs.

The police officer said that to arrest drug smugglers and anti-social elements, a special drive had been initiated against them. He claimed that during the year 2018-2019, a total of 288 cases were registered against drug smugglers under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and 407 smugglers were arrested with heavy recovery of poppy husk, heroin, ganja, and intoxicant powder.

NUKKAD NATAK

Ludhiana Rural police on Wednesday started ‘Nukkad Natak’ (street play) to create awareness against smuggling of drugs and consumption of intoxicant powder and heroin by the youth of Punjab, in the affected villages of each sub- division of Ludhiana Rural.

Police said the play had been specially designed to motivate the youth of Punjab against the abuse of drugs and make them volunteer to support the administration against drug smuggling. It added that this sequence of ‘Nukad Natak’ was played by Red Arts Group of Moga, organised by Baljit Balli and his team.
