Arunachal Pradesh limps back to normalcy, curfew revoked

ITANAGAR: The situation in Arunachal Pradesh 's Capital Complex is finally returning to normal, with no case of violence reported for the second consecutive day. Curfew was relaxed on Tuesday but internet services remain suspended.

Arunachal Scouts - an infantry regiment of the Army - staged a flag march through Itanagar and Naharlagun .

"I have sought additional forces from the Centre, which has already sent 1,000 paramilitary personnel to assist the state government in restoring peace ... I believe there are forces behind these incidents as Arunachal is a peaceful state, particularly Itanagar," chief minister Pema Khandu said in a statement.

Addressing a press conference here after attending a cabinet meeting in the evening on Monday, the chief minister dismissed the Congress's demand for his resignation. "The violent protests could be politically backed. Why should I resign?" Khandu said.

Meanwhile, the Northeast Frontier Railway announced that the New Delhi-Naharlagun Arunachal Express would be short-terminated at Harmuti in Assam , about 35 km from here, till the situation normalises.

Protests against a government-appointed panel's recommendation to grant Permanent Residence Certificates (PRCs) to six non-indigenous communities escalated on Friday. The state government, meanwhile, clarified that it was not going to pursue the matter and urged people to end the protests.
