Asansol clash: Mayor Jitendra Kr Tiwari lodges complaint against BJP MP Babul Supriyo

Kolkata: Asansol Municipal Corporation Mayor Jitendra Kr Tiwari has filed a complaint against BJP leader and local MP Babul Supriyo, accusing him of provoking the BJP cadre for hooliganism during the blood donation camp held in the area this Friday. While Tiwari said that Supriyo instigated the clashes between BJP and Trinamool Congress workers, the BJP MP has hit back calling Tiwari "leader of TMC goons".

"You are very well aware of the fact that Asansol Municipal Corporation had organised a blood donation camp on July 5 to meet the deficiency of blood in Blood Bank of Asansol district hospital. Unfortunately, the members and hooligans of BJP with the provocation of the MP of Asansol, Babul Supriyo, without taking any permission, have gathered and tried to rampage this great work. As a result, many people were forced to leave the place and restrained from joining this magnificent cause out of fear," Mayor Jitendra Kr Tiwari said.

Refusing to directly comment on the complaint, Supriyo said that videos of the incident were available where masked men can be seen brandishing weapons in front of the police. On Tiwari's charge that he organised BJP cadre in the area without permission,  Supriyo said that he had permission to carry out a demonstration in the area for the people.

"These are goons and their leader makes a comment, I would not respond to them. Permission was sought, which was given. We had permission to do the demonstration for the people," Supriyo was quoted by ANI as saying.

On Friday, clashes had broken out between BJP and TMC workers when the latter organised a blood donation camp in the area and BJP workers started demonstrating. Soon after, workers from both the parties hurled abuses and pelted stones at each other.

Meanwhile, the police were quoted by news agency ANI as saying that Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) gathered in the area without permission and had planned demonstration before the Asansol Municipal Corporation building demanding better civic facilities, but it did not have permission from the administration.

West Bengal has been witnessing several incidents of clashes between BJP and TMC workers. Both the parties have blamed each for the incidents of violence.
