Assam flood: Over 70 lakh people affected, says Sarbananda Sonowal; death toll mounts to 84

Guwahati: Six more people have lost their lives in flood-related incidents in Assam, taking the death toll to 84, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said on Monday. The deluge has affected over 70 lakh people, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said. However, as per ASDMA, over 25 lakh people in 24 of the 33 districts of the state have been affected during May 22-July 19.

The fatalities count released by the authority is also of the same period.

Sonowal said his government is trying its level best to provide relief to the affected. “People, as well as animals, are being rescued from the affected areas and being shifted to relief camps and safer locations,” the Assam chief minister said.

“On one hand, people are troubled due to COVID-19 and on the other hand there are challenges arising out of floods. Still, the people of our state continue to fight the battle,” Sonowal added.

He assured that Central and state governments have been providing all kinds of assistance to the people and will continue to do so.

Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger mark in Neamati Ghat (Jorhat), Tezpur (Sonitpur), Goalpara and Dhubri. Dhansiri River is flowing above the danger mark Numaligarh. Jia Bharali, Kopili, Beki, Kushiyara and Sankosh -- are also flowing above danger levels at various places.

Districts which have been affected are Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswananath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Baksa, Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat, Majuli, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia.
