Assam govt expects positivity rate of COVID-19 cases in the state to come down to 2.5% from 5%

Guwahati: Assam is the worst affected state in North East India with 64,406 cases till August 10 of which 43,586 have recovered and 20,662 re still active. The death figure has also mounted to 155. In 24 hours on 11th August, 52,062 tests were conducted across the state and 2,669 were tested positive for COVID-19 with a positivity rate of 5.12%.

Out of these 2,669 cases, 299 are from Kamrup Metropolitan district which includes Guwahati, 259 from Dibrugarh,189 from Karbi Anglong and 181 from Tinsukia district. From August 12, the state government has taken an aggressive step of conducting 1 lakh tests on a single day.

Talking to Times Now, Assam Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said that he is hopeful that with more number of tests conducted on a daily wise which will be a larger sample size, the positivity rate of COVID-19 cases in the state will come down from the present 5% to 2.5%.

On August 9, the state health minister announced that the state government will provide COVID-19 patients preferring to stay in home isolation a pulse oximeter and first-line supportive medicine completely free in Guwahati.

The state government has also activated Telekom Medicine service for COVID-19 patients through 104, which will be expanded to other parts of the state soon. Meanwhile, the Golaghat district administration in Assam has roped in cadets of the National Cadet Corps as new COVID warriors to spread awareness.

On Wednesday (August 12) as requisitioned by the district administration, NCC cadets of 12 Assam Battalion took part in "Exercise Yogdan" wherein the cadets joined hand in combating against COVID-19.

In this exercise, the cadets provided with a mask, sanitizer and vehicle by the civil administration were deployed in markets to explain the importance of wearing face masks, using sanitizer and maintaining social distance in public places. Significantly Golaghat is one of the worst COVID-19 affected districts in the state.
