Aurangabad: AIMIM wins first Lok Sabha seat outside Hyderabad

Aurangabad : Policenama Online – Journalist turned politician Imtiaz Jaleel, who contested the 17th Lok Sabha elections on All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) from Aurangabad, created history for the party. Since its formation, AIMIM had not won any Lok Sabha seat except Hyderabad in Telangana.

In a close contest, Jaleel defeated four times MP Chandrakant Khaire of Shiv Sena by 4492 votes. Jaleel had got 3,89,042 votes as compared to Khaire’s 3,84,550 votes. It is believed that Jaleel win was due to Harshvardhan Jadhav, an independent candidate, who got 2,83,798 votes.

Chandrakant Khaire (born 1 January 1952) is a Shiv Sena politician from Aurangabad district. He has been elected consecutively for 4 terms in Lok Sabha representing Aurangabad for 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014. He was two time member of legislative assembly from Aurangabad West in 1990 and 1995. He had also served as cabinet minister in Maharashtra State government from 1995 to 1999 in Shiv Sena Government.

Sayed Imtiyaz Jaleel (born 10 August 1968) is an Indian politician and member of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen. He was elected as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from the Aurangabad central constituency of Maharashtra in the Assembly Election of 2014.

Imtiyaz Jaleel has 23 years of experience in journalism – 11 years with Lokmat and near 12 years with NDTV. He entered politics in 2014.
