Aurangabad: Two cops held for accepting Rs 80,000 bribe

AURANGABAD: An assistant inspector heading the detection branch and his subordinate, both posted at MIDC Waluj police station, were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on late Thursday night for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 80,000 from a scrap trader.

Assistant inspector Rahul Rode (32), and assistant sub-inspector Shaikh Anwar (49) were produced before a court on Friday which remanded them in police custody for a day.

The accused were arrested near MIDC Waluj police station. The police station is considered to be one of the most plum police stations in the region, having jurisdiction over 2,000 industries and manufacturing units—making it one of the most preferred postings for policemen.

Superintendent of police (ACB), Aurangabad unit, Arvind Chawria told TOI, “The detection branch team had rounded up eight women labourers working for a small-time scrap trader. They allegedly demanded Rs 25,000 from each of the labourers for releasing them and not registering an offence against them.”

A source informed that initially the scrap trader tried throwing a ‘party’ and arrange for an expensive scotch so that the duo releases the labourers, but in vain. Later, the scrap trader lodged a complaint with the ACB on Thursday.

During negotiations, the officer agreed to accept Rs 10,000 for each labourer in the presence of a pancha. The officer asked the scrap trader to drop the money in his car. No sooner did he board the car than the ACB team caught him and his subordinate red-handed. An offence under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act was registered with MIDC Waluj police on Friday morning.
