Ayodhya verdict in our favour as BJP is in power: Bharuch MP

Surat: Bharuch BJP MP Mansukh Vasava waded into a controversy after claiming that Supreme Court gave a verdict "in our favour" on the Ram Janmabhoomi dispute in Ayodhya because a BJP government is at the Centre.

Vasava made the statement while addressing a gathering of BJP workers in Bharuch town on Thursday.

Vasava’s video also went viral on the social media platforms, inviting likes and dislikes.

“The Ram Janmbhoomi issue was quite old. So many years went by. The Ram Janmabhoomi movement was going on even before India got independence. So many people were martyred and many took part in the movement (to build a Ram Temple at the disputed site). The Supreme Court had to give a judgement in our favour because the BJP government is at the Centre," the MP said.

Vasava’s statement has invited sharp criticism from the opposition Congress.

Bharuch Congress President, Parimalsinh Rana told TOI, “It is very unfortunate that a senior MP is making such comments at a public forum. Is he trying to create communal tension by claiming that the power of BJP government at the Centre forced SC to give such a judgement?.”

Rana added, “We have demanded an apology from Vasava over his irresponsible statement.”

On Friday, Vasava tried to play down the issue saying he was only referring to the way in which the BJP government handled law and order after the judgement.

"You can imagine what would have been situation if BJP was not ruling in Uttar Pradesh and at the Centre. Violence might have erupted at many places. But, since the BJP is in power, no such thing happened. Thanks to the BJP government, peaceful atmosphere prevailed after the verdict," Vasava said.

State BJP spokesperson Bharat Pandya said a senior leader like Vasava ought to avoid making irresponsible statements, but also slammed the Congress for denying the existence of Lord Ram on affidavit. “Mansukhbhai should have avoided such comments. The Supreme Court decided the case on the basis of 265 scientific evidences. If the Congress was in power, they might have suppressed facts of Ram Mandir,” Pandya said.
