Banka man kills father for pension money

Patna: In a shocking incident, a 65-year-old retired railway employee Sidheshwar Soren was badly beaten up by his son in Banka district late on Monday evening after he refused to give his pension amount to him. He died during treatment at a government hospital in Deoghar.

Police on Tuesday arrested the accused, Mahendra Soren (23), and sent him to jail for killing his father.



The incident took place on Monday evening at Janakpur village under Chandan police station area in Banka district. Sidheshwar was attacked with sticks and iron rods by his son Mahendra when the deceased’s elder son, Randhir (28), had gone to his in-laws’ house. His 60-year-old wife Phulmani Hansda told police that Mahendra had demanded money from his father after the latter withdrew his pension amount from the bank. “As the entire family relied on his pension, he refused to give any money. Infuriated over this, Mahendra attacked his father with a lathi and some hard blunt substance grievously injuring him,” Phulmani said.

Mahendra was so furious that he also assaulted his mother when she came forward to rescue her injured husband. “I too had to bear the brunt of my younger son,” she said while narrating her woes to the police offcers from Chandan police station who rushed to the spot to inquire into the incident.

Another resident told police that Mahendra had locked the room from inside while thrashing his father and that is why Sidheshwar could not be saved. A sub-inspector of police Dhurandhar Singh, who visited the place of occurrence said on Tuesday, “Sidheshwar was alive when police reached the village. He was rushed to Chandan primary health centre from he was referred to the government hospital at Deoghar, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment,” Singh said.

Another police official Khursheed Alam, who was part of the investigation team, said that Mahendra had hid himself in a room. “We had to use mild force to take the accused into custody. On Tuesday, he was produced in a Banka court which remanded him to 14-day judicial custody,” Alam said.

Earlier, an FIR was lodged with the Chandan police station on the statement of the deceased’s wife in which she had accused Mahendra of killing his father. “He is a habitual drunkard and spends a lot on boozing leaving the family in penury,” she added.
