Bareilly: Bride's cousin, 8, killed as men in baarat open fire to celebrate

BAREILLY: A joyous wedding ceremony in Sambhal district turned into deep sorrow when an eight-year-old girl was killed in yet another incident of celebratory firing in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday night. Little Kumkum, the bride’s cousin , was killed in Kanhova village after guests from the groom’s side, in an inebriated state, began firing in the air.

Kumkum died on the spot.

This was the second such incident in the district in 24 hours. On Tuesday, a youth had sustained bullet injuries in a similar celebratory firing in Singhavali village. And in the past four months, two persons have been killed in Sambhal due to celebratory firing.

The latest incident took place when the wedding rituals were being performed and one Bhola Yadav allegedly started firing in the air. A resident of Tarfari village, Jai Narayan Yadav had fixed his daughter’s marriage with Jogendra Yadav’s son Sanjay, a Kanhova resident. People from the bride’s side had arrived at Kanhova village to accomplish ‘lagn’ ceremony.

“Everyone was enjoying and we were busy in completing ‘lagn’ when Bhola and his two friends arrived in an inebriated state. Bhola pulled out a weapon from his pocket and started firing. The bullet struck my daughter who was sitting next to us and she fell unconscious in a pool of blood. Immediately, all our joy turned into deep sorrow,” said Satish Yadav, father of little Kumkum. The girl was taken to hospital where doctors declared her as brought dead.

Police reached the spot after receiving information of the celebratory firing incident. However, the accused had fled by then. An FIR under section 302 (murder) has been registered against Bhola Yadav on the basis of a complaint lodged with police by Satish Yadav.

Superintendent of police Yamuna Prasad said, “An FIR has been lodged and further action will be taken in the matter. We have deployed two teams to nab the accused. It is still unclear whether the weapon used in the firing incident was licenced or illegal.”
