Bareilly: Couple booked trying to sell adopted minor daughter for Rs 5 lakh

BAREILLY: A couple was booked for allegedly attempting to sell their 16-year-old adopted daughter for Rs 5 lakh in Bithri Chainpur area of Bareilly district on Sunday. While her foster father has been arrested, her foster mother is on the run.

The girl’s foster father allegedly agreed to solemnize his daughter’s marriage with an elderly man for the money.

He is said to have accepted an advance payment of Rs 50,000 from the would-be elderly groom.

According to police , the girl somehow got wind of the deal and got in touch with her biological parents. They came and took her away in the last week of March.

Thereafter, the girl and her parents approached local police for filing a complaint against her foster parents but to no avail. Later, the girl approached ADG Avinash Chandra, who asked circle officer (CO) Baheri Ashok Kumar to investigate the case.

After thorough investigation, Kumar found the complaint to be genuine and ordered that an FIR be filed against the girl’s foster parents under IPC section 372 (selling minor for purpose of prosecution) at Deorania police station. The man was arrested and sent to jail on Sunday while his wife mother is at large.

According to sources, the accused childless couple had adopted the girl when she was four years old from a poor family. Later, they adopted a baby boy as well. Over time, they started neglecting their adopted daughter. Then, her foster father struck a deal with an elderly man to sell his daughter to him in the guise of marriage.

R P Mathur, SHO, Deorania, told TOI, “The investigation of this case was completed by circle officer Ashok Kumar and he instructed us to file an FIR in this case. After filing the complaint, we arrested the girl’s father and sent him to the district jail. We initially couldn't take action as the place of incident was not within our jurisdiction. However, the circle officer does have the right to investigate such cases.”
