Beach volleyball debuts in landlocked MP

BHOPAL: Madhya Pradesh, a landlocked state, is all set to promote beach volleyball with the first edition of state-level championship being organised at Tatya Tope Stadium on Sunday. Around 26 teams in both boys and girls categories from across the state will contest in the championship.


MP is the third landlocked state in the country after Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh that have artificially-made sand courts.

Beach volleyball was introduced at the Summer Olympic Games in the 1992 Games as a demonstration event, and has been an official Olympic sport since 1996. Director sports SL Thaosen said this game is quite popular across the world. “It is an Olympic sports. We are doing it to give players an opportunity to scale heights in a game which is limited to club level only in the country as of now,” said Thaosen. Sports department has developed a dedicated court at the Tatya Tope Stadium. Department officials said preparations were underway for past one month. Besides, department has developed same kind of court in six other districts across the state. It has been developed at Bhopal and Narsinghpur. Other courts are being developed in Jabalpur, Sagar, Ujjain, Gwalior and Chhindwara .
