Begusarai shrines to spread social messages

PATNA: Temples, mosques and churches in Begusarai would now disseminate messages on social issues, health and sanitation after their routine prayers every day.

A direction to this effect was issued last week by the district administration after a meeting with heads of different religious places like temples, mosques and churches.

The directions were issued following a workshop on better health of mothers and children. Citing references from the religious texts, the Geeta, Quran and the Bible, Begusarai DM Rahul Kumar reminded religious heads about their obligation to teach social issues, sanitation and hygiene.

“Since religions are deep rooted in our culture and people value the preaching of their priests, dissemination of social, ethical and hygienic messages by them would be of great impact,” the DM said while addressing the workshop. He added that the district administration will also provide banners and flexes with messages for putting up in and around the religious places. “Prominent display of banners with slogans written on special occasions and festivals, when temples, mosques and churches witness a large number of devotees, would have a bigger impact,” he said.

The DM said delivery of a child by unskilled attendants pose threat to the life of both the newborn and the mother and this message should be incorporated in the after-prayer preachings in temples, mosques and churches. “Refusal to take polio drops and other vaccines, denial of women's right, superstition and illiteracy, also adversely affect social progress,” he said.
