Belgaum: Power looms ruined in flood, weaver ends life

BELAGAVI: A weaver from Halagatti village in Ramdurg taluk hanged himself on Sunday after his power looms were destroyed in the recent floods.

Ramesh Neelakanthappa Hawalakhod , 38, is survived by his wife and a daughter. Sources said the power looms were the only source of his livelihood. Parts of his house collapsed in the recent flooding of Malaprabha river and his looms were submerged.

Ramesh was depressed, police said, as he required about Rs 1 lakh to repair the looms. He had also availed of loans for which he had to pay weekly instalments.

A case has been registered in Ramdurg police station. Around 56 power looms have been destroyed in Halagatti. Textile department officials have conducted a survey but compensation is yet to be released to those affected.
