Bengaluru man attacks ex-lover, later consumes poison

BENGALURU: A jilted lover allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend with a machete for not accepting his marriage proposal and later committed suicide by consuming poison. The girl, who survived the attack, is hospitalised and battling for life.

The incident occurred in Annapoorneshwari Nagar police limits on Wednesday morning and the girl's condition is critical.

The deceased is 26-year-old Girish, a resident of Anchepalya . The victim is Nithyashree, a resident of Annapoorneshwari Nagar and from Maddur in Mandya district . She suffered multiple injuries on her head, face, neck and hand.

Police said the duo fell in love while they were doing their graduation, but separated four months ago. Girish who worked as housekeeping supervisor at a private hospital had been pestering Nithyashree to marry him, but she constantly refused.

Around 11.30am o n Wednesday, the duo met in Annapoorneshwari Nagar, where Girish continued to pester her to get married. When Nithyashree refused, he assaulted her with a machete before fleeing the spot. He rode his bike towards Tavarekere and consumed poison midway. Upon reaching Tavarekere, he sat by the roadside and fell unconscious. A few passersby shifted him to a hospital, but doctors declared him brought dead.

Girish and Nithyashree hail from the same town and knew each other for six years. After Nithyashree came out of the relationship, she lived with her sister in Annapoorneshwari Nagar but the duo were in touch. While they decided to meet one last time following Girish's requests, they weren't able to due to lockdown. Once the lockdown was relaxed, they decided to catch up.

Police said two different cases have been registered in this regard and probe is under way.
