Bhanvad lashed by 130mm rain in 2 hours

RAJKOT: After three weeks of lull, torrential rainfall pounded five districts of Saurashtra on Tuesday with Bhanvad town of Devbhumi Dwarka district getting 130mm within just two hours between 4pm to 6pm.

Most talukas of Devbhumi Dwarka Rajkot, Junagadh, Gir-Somnath and Amreli districts reeled under severe wet spell that resulted in dams overflowing, flash floods in rivers and heavy waterlogging in the towns and villages.

Heavy rain was reported in Veraval and Sutrapada in Gir-Somnath and Mangrol in Junagadh since early morning, while Rajula, Jafrabad, Dhari and Khambha of Amreli were also drenched. Eight gates of Dhatarvadi-2 dam were opened due to heavy rain.

According to sources, an alert was sounded for Porbandar villages in the downstream of Vartu-2 dam in Devbhoomi Dwarka as it started overflowing.

Meanwhile, the fresh spell of rain has brought smiles to groundnut and cotton farmers who feared that the delay in monsoon after the first week of July could affect the crop.

Paras Sojitra, a farmer in Amreli said, “Nearly three weeks had passed since the last rainfall and groundnut crop needs a second round of rain in 15-20 days of sowing. Luckily, the second bout of rains came at the right time.”

Somnath-Bhavnagar highway near Nageshree remained closed for almost five hours due to waterlogging on the causeway because of incessant rain leaving long queues of commuters from Dwarka, Kodinar and Somnath going towards Bhavnagar and vice versa stranded on both the sides.

Rain water flooded nearly 100 shops in Bagasara town of Amreli while five buffaloes were swept away in Thordi village of Savarkundla taluka.
