Bhilwara DC to serve only half-glass of water

JAIPUR: Bhilwara district collector (DC) Rajendra Bhatt, in an order on August 15, directed his staff to serve only half-a-glass of water to visitors at all government offices. He made a similar appeal to the public, saying that the move will prevent the wastage of drinking water.

"The order was needed because there was too much (water) wastage.

All of Bhilwara's 12 blocks are reeling under water scarcity and though we received good rainfall this monsoon, the groundwater level is still very low," Bhatt said, adding, "When people are served a full glass of water, most of the times they don't even drink half of it and the remaining water is wasted."

"Till four years ago, a train used to supply drinking water in the district," the DC told TOI while highlighting the acute water shortage in the region.

‘We are trying to stop the rampant wastage’

As per the order, visitors will be served half-aglass of water, that too, after being asked if they want it. “If someone wants more, they will get it, but we are trying to stop the rampant wastage,” Bhatt said.

The DC has also asked all schools in the district to announce the move in Monday’s morning assembly in a bid to encourage students to follow the practice at home too. “Before the Chambal water project started supplying water, people understood the shortage and used water judiciously. Now, they are getting water supply daily because of which there is more wastage,” he said. “As of now, the project supplies water only to Bhilwara city. During summer, we supplied drinking water in 500 tankers per day to areas which don’t have a regular supply,” he added.
