The department issued challans to 356 motorists for displaying registration numbers of their vehicles in violation of the prescribed norms envisaged in Central Motor Vehicle Rules.

Around Rs 3.5 lakh was collected as fine from the erring motorists across the state under the special drive. Use of fancy number plates attracts fine up to Rs 1,000 as per Section 177 of Motor Vehicles Act.

The most common offence is writing of registration numbers in ways which resemble words like ‘Rocky’, ‘Dabang’, ‘King’, ‘Baba’ and ‘Riders’.

As per the provisions of the MV Act, 1988, nothing except the registration number of the vehicle should be displayed on the number plates.

Transport department secretary Sanjay Kumar Agarwal said vehicle registration numbers should be written only in English for proper recognition and security purpose. “Motorists who use Devnagiri script on the number plate will also face action.
