Bihar: Eerie silence in Vaishali village after murder of four

PATNA: An eerie silence prevails at Shivkumarpur village near Raghopur in Vaishali district following the death of four people and injury to another in a violent group clash on Sunday.

Majority of the residents of the village situated on the banks of the Ganga have deserted their houses and taken shelter at safer places elsewhere in the wake of retaliation of Sunday’s incident.

The accused and their family members are still evading arrest.

“The entire village is wearing a deserted look. Two sections of armed police forces have been deployed at the village as a precautionary measure. Raids are on to arrest the culprits involved in the crime,” SHO of Rustampur police outpost Santosh Kumar said.

While the body of Nazir Rai was recovered from a house soon after the incident, three others — Putul Rai, Chenarik Rai and Johnson Rai — are still traceless. Their relatives told the police that they had seen the assailants taking the three victims with them in a country boat after shooting them with country-made rifles.

The SHO said local divers were pressed into service to fish out the bodies of the three missing people from the swollen river. “The search operation continued for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, but to no avail,” SHO of Rustampur police outpost Santosh Kumar said on Tuesday.

Police sources said the residents of Shivkumarpur shifted to nearby Jafarpur following soil erosion in the river. The rivalry between two families — Nazir Rai and Sanjivan Rai — over a land dispute is going on for long. However, a last week incident in which Nazir’s nephew hit the motorbike belonging to Sanjivin’s son added fuel to the fire, an investigating officer said.
