Bihar floods: 10 dead, 24 lakh affected in 11 districts as Patna Meterological Centre warns of more rain

Darbhanga: The Patna Meteorological Centre has warned of more rain till August 1 in Bihar, especially in the northern parts closer to the foothills of the Himalayas. Bihar is fighting a devastating flood situation with more than 24.42 lakh people in 765 panchayats of 93 blocks in 11 districts affected. Ten people have lost their lives due to the floods in Bihar though no fresh fatality was reported on Monday.

Darbhanga is the worst affected with not just houses but police stations and flood relief camps have also been submerged, Times Now’s Shyam reported from Darbhanga. More than 8.87 lakh people have been displaced in 14 blocks of here.

The local are complaining that they get no help from the authorities.

Some trains in the Darbhanga-Samastipur section has been diverted due to floodwaters coming up to the girder of Railway bridge in between south Hayaghat and Thalwara, Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO), of East Central Railway zone, Rajesh Kumar, said.

Other flood-affected districts include Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Supaul, Kishanganj, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, West Champaran, East Champaran, Khagaria and Saran.

The flood situation is expected to further deteriorate in the northern belt from Gopalganj to Katihar. Seven rivers and their tributaries - Baghmati, Burhi Gandak, Kamlabalan, Lalbakeya, Adhwara, Khiroi, and Ghaghra - in Bihar have water level above the danger mark at 24 spots in 15 districts of the state. The water level of Ganga is increasing at Hathidah, Munger, Bhagalpur, and Kahalgaon. Though the level has gone down at Gandhi ghat in Patna, it has remained steady at Buxar and Digha in Patna, a Water Resources Departments bulletin said. The embankments are under pressure in these areas.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has said that embankments should be subjected to round-the-clock monitoring. Engineers of the Water Resources Department have been asked to be alert.

Seventeen teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and eight of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are involved in the rescue operations in the state. Around 1.67 people have been evacuated from the affected areas so far. Due to the worsening situation, Indian Air Force helicopters have stooped delivering food packages in Gopalganj, Darbhanga and East Champaran. The disaster management is carrying relief work using boats and other means.
