Bihar: Former Maoist killed in Jamui district

PATNA: A 35-year-old former Maoist , Ravi Yadav , was beaten to death by unidentified men at Taratand village under Khaira police station area in Jamui district late Monday night. The police recovered the body early Tuesday morning.

Police said Ravi, a native of Thamman village under Charkha Patthar police station area in Jamui district, had gone missing on Monday evening.

On Tuesday morning, some local residents spotted a body lying in a roadside ditch.

Ravi’s grandfather Dayanand Yadav said the deceased had left home with some acquaintances on Monday evening for some work. “On Tuesday morning, the family received information about his body lying on the outskirts of Taratand village,” he said.

Ravi’s uncle Shankar Yadav said Ravi was living with his family at Khaira Bazar after he was released on bail in 2016. He was arrested in connection with a Maoist-related incident in 2014. “Ravi was leading a normal life after being released on bail,” he told this newspaper over phone.

The family members said Ravi, whose names once spelt terror in Khaira and Charkha Patthar police station areas, had settled at Khaira Bazar as he apprehended reprisal from the rival group.

“He had not been involved in any Maoist incident for the last three years,” his grandfather claimed.

The terror of the rival faction could be gauged from the fact that the police didn’t visit the spot and assigned the task of lifting the body to the village chaukidar. “The police didn’t visit the spot for investigation and sent the body to the Sadar hospital at Jamui for postmortem,” a police officer said.

Khaira SHO Vinod Ram didn’t rule out the involvement of a rival group of the CPI(Maoist) in the killing. “It could also be the handiwork of some local criminals operating in the garb of Maoists,” he said.

The SHO said the body bore external injuries, which showed that Ravi was assaulted with sticks and blunt substance, causing his death. “The postmortem report is awaited,” he told this newspaper on Tuesday. At least half a dozen cases related to attack on security personnel, murder, attempt to murder and extortion, were pending against the deceased with different police stations in Jamui and other districts.
