Bihar: Girl refuses to marry drunk groom in Samastipur, relatives take wedding guests hostage

Samastipur: A marriage was called off in Bihar's Samastipur district after the groom and his father were found heavily drunk during the wedding ceremony. Not only this, the wedding guests were taken hostage by the girl's relatives.

According to a report in News18, the incident took place at Rasalpur village under Mufassil police station.

Surendra Mahto's son Suraj Kumar was to marry Om Prakash's daughter in Rasalpur village. When the groom reached the venue he was completely drunk. As the relatives of the bride went to groom's father to complaint about his son, he too was found drunk. This made the hosts angry and the bride refused to marry the man.

The girl's family took the wedding guests hostage and released them only after the groom's side paid Rs 50,000. Not only this, the groom and his father was also taken hostage. They too were released after coughing up Rs 3.5 lakh on the mediation of the panchayat.

During the commotion, the groom's sister informed the police. But she alleged that there was no action from police. However, police later reached the spot and probed the matter.

In a similar case reported in March this year, a wedding was called off in Dumri Chapiya village in Bihar after the bride refused to marry boy as he came for the marriage in an inebriated state.

Also in January, a police constable was rejected by the bride after he arrived drunk for his own wedding at Kahalgaon subdivision in Bihar's Bhagalpur. The constable was sent to jail for his errant act.

In 2016 in Kanpur, a bride walked out of her wedding ceremony after the groom was found drunk. The bride's decision at the venue led to ugly scenes with both sides entering into a confrontation.
