Bike thief dies after being thrashed by group in Theni

Theni: A 42-year-old man from a village near Bodinayakkanur in Theni district, who was caught red-handed and thrashed by a group for stealing their bike, developed health complications and died on way to the hospital.

The deceased was identified as K Babu from Dombuchery. He was residing in Pooparai near Munnar in Kerala and working as a daily wage labourer.

He is involved in a few theft cases.

Police said Babu had stolen a bike belonging to Arun Pandian from Pudur near Bodinayakkanur and was on his way to Bodimettu. Pandian and his friends stopped him at Bodi-Mundhal Road in the early hours of Thursday and beat him up. As he developed health problem, Pandian and his friends took him to a nearby government hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Police are yet to ascertain whether he died due to the attack or health problems. They are awaiting the postmortem report for further action.A case was registered by the Kurangani police under CrPc Section 174 (suspicious death).
