BJP, Cong name bypoll candidates

Kolkata: The BJP on Saturday announced its candidates for the November 25 bypolls to three assembly constituencies in West Bengal while Congress named two.

Bengal BJP vice-president Jay Prakash Majumdar will contest from Karimpur (Nadia), which fell vacant after Trinamool’s Mahua Moitra became an MP from Krishnanagar seat.

Majumdar is pitted against Trinamool’s Bimalendu Singha Roy and Congress-backed CPM candidate Golam Rabbi.

BJP’s Prem Chandra Jha will contest from Kharagpur (Sadar) in West Midnapore. Jha, who contested from the seat in the 2011 Lok Sabha polls, is now Bengal BJP’s district vice president. He will face off with Congress’ Chittaranjan Mandal.

The party’s Kamal Chandra Sarkar will contest from Kaliaganj in North Dinajpur. He is pitted against Left Front-backed Congress candidate Dhitasree Roy and Trinamool’s Tapan Deb Singha. The Kaliaganj seat fell vacant after Congress legislator Pramathanath Roy passed away. Dhitasree is his daughter.
