Blaze fails to stop voters in Faizabad, turnout up 2%

AYODHYA: Neither a blazing sun nor dusty winds could stop voters from reaching polling booths across this temple town on Monday, a heartening trend that pushed the voting percentage in Faizabad up by 2% this year.

In 2014, the voting percentage in Faizabad was 58.90%. Till 6pm on Monday, the constituency had recorded 60.40%.

Most people, irrespective of age and religion, flocked to their respective booths early. While a few shops around Hanuman Garhi began business as usual, residents largely lazed under shady trees with flags of BJP or Congress or both fluttering over their heads.

"This election is being fought for development in Ayodhya . For jobs, not for temple or mosque ," said Iqbal Ansari, a petitioner in the Ram Janmbhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute, after casting his vote.

Excited to vote for the first time, 18-year-old Shraddha Gupta said he had waited in eager anticipation of this moment for 10 days.

"Besides development, Ayodhya needs measures to tackle the monkey menace," she said after voting at a Katra polling station.
