Blood grouping done for 151 indigenous dogs in Tirunelveli

TIRUNELVELI: A total of 151 indigenous breed dogs such as Chippiparai , Kanni, Kombai and Rajapalayam from Tirunelveli , Virudhunagar, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari districts were brought for the free master health check-up, micro-chipping anti-rabies, blood grouping and vaccination camp held here on Monday.


The camp, organized by the government Veterinary College and Research Institute (VC&RI) at Ramayanpatti in Tirunelveli, was to document the health parameters of native breed dogs. Blood analysis, echocardiograph and morphometric analysis tests were done on the dogs. Blood groups too were identified to promote blood donation.

Professor and head of the Veterinary Clinical Complex at the VC&RI, R Ramprabhu said microchipping was also done for the dogs to help prevent thefts as there is a growing demand for indigenous breeds in rural and urban areas.

Earlier in the day, vice-chancellor of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, C Balachandran inaugurated the camp and spoke on the importance of rearing indigenous breeds. He also released a handbook on indigenous breeds of Tamil Nadu.
