Bodies of teachers, driver swept away in overflowing nullah, recovered in Ujjain district

INDORE: Bodies of three persons, including two women school teachers , who were swept away in an overflowing nullah in Mahidpur tehsil of Ujjain district , were fished out of the waters by rescuers on Friday.

The victims were travelling in a car on Thursday when they were swept away by strong currents in Pilia Khal nullah on Somalia road.

School teachers Shailaja Parkhi of Tilak Nagar (Indore) and Neeta Shelke (Ujjain) were returning to their respective homes in a hired taxi from Independence Day celebrations at a school in Barkheda Bujurg village , when the incident is believed to have taken place. As they failed to reach their destinations, their families raised an alarm.

Soon after villagers raised suspicion of the accident, rescuers were deployed overnight to trace the car and the bodies.

Incessant rains since last four days had led to swollen rivers and rivulets, cutting off road connectivity to several areas in the district.

The Pilia Khal nullah is known to be unpredictable and joins the Kshipra river, where strong currents are noticed during monsoon.

The victims are reported to have stopped at the nullah for a brief period, before deciding to cross it. The car was later found nearly two km from the spot.
