Booze cheaper by 5 per cent in Mohali

MOHALI: Booze lovers have a reason to cheer, as liquor prices are likely to decrease by 5% in Mohali district. Beer is likely to cost Rs 10 less. However, prices are still higher than in Chandigarh.

Mohali excise and taxation department has increased the annual quota of liquor. But excise duty will remain the same for the next financial year.

This is the main reason behind reduction in liquor prices, said an official.

The department has increased 6% quota of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) and 10% quota of Punjab made liquor (PML) . Besides 16 annual quota of beer is also lifted.

Parmjit Singh, assistant commissioner, excise and taxation department, said, "The excise duty has not been increased and annual quota of liquor has been lifted for 2019-20 financial year."

The department has also planned to constitute additional battalion to control inter state liquor smuggling. The additional battalion will comprise a IG/DIG rank officer, three superintendents of police, deputy superintendents of police (if needed) and 50-60 policemen.

Sources said that to stop liquor smuggling, there is a need to make common excise policy of Chandigarh and Punjab. Otherwise, it is difficult to curb the trade.
