Bridge Collapse: Your drive to Sasan just got longer by 40 km

The collapse of 60-feet-long bridge, about 15 km from Sasan-Gir, will increase the travelling time to the lions’ abode by an hour thanks to alternate route opened by officials. The route, which will pass through the forest area, will increase the distance to Gir by 40 kilometres.

Gir Sanctuary is a popular spot for tourists in the upcoming Diwali festival time.

Motorists will have to now take a detour from Mendarda and pass through Devaliya Park road to reach Sasan.

The bridge was built around 40 years ago and collapsed on Sunday evening in which four persons received minor injuries and two cars and a three two-wheelers got stuck under the debris.

Junagadh Collector Pardhi Sourabh Zamsingh said, “We are working out options to reduce diversion distance. It will take 4 to 6 months to repair the bridge.”

The Gir safari park will open from October 15 after monsoon break. Last year, 75,000 tourists visited Sasan and surrounding areas. A heavy rush is expected this year as well. Chief Conservator of Forest (Junagadh) D T Vasavada said, “We have removed travel restriction on the road passing through Devaliya. We plan to increase patrolling on that road to ensure wildlife is not disturbed because of traffic. We will also afix more number of reflectors on trees for benefit of motorists ”
