Burglars flee after abandoning uprooted ATM in Karnal, cash intact

KARNAL: The police have registered a case against unknown persons for uprooting and robbing an ICICI automated teller machine (ATM) in Karnal during the wee hours of Wednesday.

The police said three to four persons came on a motorcycle at around 2.30am to the ATM kiosk on the Phoosgarh road and tried to break the machine open.

When they failed, they uprooted the machine with an iron rod and carried it in a rickshaw. When the burglars reached Shastri colony at 3.30am, a watchman saw them. When he tried to catch the accused, they assaulted him. The scuffle drew a few people, who came to investigate the noise and the burglars abandoned the ATM and fled.

The police said the ATM had no guard and there was no CCTV camera installed at the spot. Karnal Sadar station house officer (SHO) Baljeet Singh said: “The investigation is under way. Cash worth Rs 2.93 lakh kept in the ATM machine is safe,” he said.
