Panaji: The government will spend Rs 12 crore on the reconstruction and renovation of Calangute police station. The existing police station is not only small, but the building has been in a dilapidated condition.

RDA minister and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo have been pushing for a new police station for several years now as Calangute constituency, that receives the highest tourist footfalls in the state, requires a better building to house its police station.

A Goa state infrastructure development corporation (GSIDC) official said, “GSIDC approved a proposal in its last board meeting after Lobo formally moved a note for the same.”

A new police station will be built at Valpoi and a police outpost with PCR at Keri and Surla has also been proposed. It will be built by GSIDC. Health minister Vishwajit Rane had placed a request to construct a new police station with modern facilities in the place of existing old police station in his constituency.

He said a letter has been sent to the headquarters of the superintendent of police, seeking approval for taking up the work. Paperwork was also moved to seek the permission of the finance department.
