Calcutta HC cancels Gangarampur no-trust vote set for today

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has set aside the no-confidence notice against the chairman of Gangarampur Municipality in South Dinajpur based on which a trust vote was fixed for Tuesday at 11am.

A meeting of the board of councillors was called after councillors Rakesh Pandit, Atanu Roy and Amalendu Sarkar served a no-confidence notice against chairman Prasanta Mitra.

Municipality vice-chairman Tulsi Prasad Chowdhury moved the HC challenging the notice.

Chowdhury said he had served a notice against the chairman on July 16, three days before the councillors’ notice. He further pointed out that a trust vote was fixed on August 5 based on his notice and that this meeting was still scheduled. “How could a second trust vote be called on Tuesday when the meeting has been fixed on August 5?” said Chowdhury’s lawyer Ashok Chakrabarty. The chairman’s lawyer, Subhojit Sil, said: “How can the trust vote be held on Tuesday when it is already fixed for August 5?”

Justice Samapti Chatterjee set aside the three councillors’ notice, thus making the trust vote set for Tuesday infructuous. The HC directed the chairman to face the trust vote on August 5.
