Calcutta HC To Get Permanent Chief Justice Next Week

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court is going to get a permanent Chief Justice after a little over three months.

Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan will take over as the Chief Justice of Calcutta HC either on 5 or 6 April. He is presently the Chief Justice of Telangana High Court.

Justice Biswanath Samaddar has been officiating as the Chief Justice of Calcutta HC since 1 January this year. This after justice Debasish Kar Gupta retired from office the previous day.

The new Chief Justice-designate was born at Kollam in Kerala and began his career as a lawyer in a court at Thiruvananthapuram in 1983. Later on, he started practicing in the Kerala High Court at Kochi.

 

In 2004, he was appointed a permanent judge of Kerala HC. At the age of 59 years, he became the first Chief Justice of Telangana HC that came into being on 1 January this year.

Union law ministry issued a notification on 23 March transferring justice Radhakrishnan to Calcutta HC as the Chief Justice. This was following a recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium.
