Cancellation of flights at Jharsuguda airport adds to passengers' woes

Jharsuguda: Flight services at Jharsuguda airport has turned out to be a nightmare for passengers as diversions and cancellation of flights has almost become a daily affair.

People blame the officials concerned whenever a flight is cancelled or gets delayed but at the end of the day, the passengers suffer, rued one passenger, Trinath Gual.

On being asked about the reasons behind the repeated cancellations of flights, the officials at the airport said that due to bad weather and lack of proper devices, flight services are getting affected at the airport.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Civil Aviation today took to Twitter and wrote: “Uncertain weather conditions are affecting flights from/to Jharsuguda airport. Steps being taken to ensure flight regularity. DVOR DME procedure is under trial approval by DGCA. Instrument Landing System (ILS) equipment is under installation.”

Responding to the matter, Jharsuguda Airport Director Sudesh Kumar Chouhan said, “After upgradation in Navigation systems, diversions and cancellation of flights will be reduced majorly.”

The Jharsuguda airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 22, 2018. On March 31, 2019, SpiceJet had launched flight services from the airport to New Delhi, Hyderabad and Kolkata under the UDAN scheme.

Later, on June 6, Alliance Air, a subsidiary of Air India, commenced its commercial flight operations from the airport to Bhubaneswar and Chhattisgarh’s Raipur.
