Case Registered Against Sundergarh SP For 'Assaulting Pregnant Woman'

Sundergarh: A case was registered against Sundergarh SP Saumya Mishra on Saturday for allegedly thrashing a pregnant woman leading to miscarriage.

Hemagiri Police Station IIC registered the case against the SP after Sundergarh Sub-divisional judicial magistrate (SDJM) court ordered the police to book the top cop based on the complaint lodged by a woman.

DIG of Police (Western Range) Kavita Jalan has been directed by the court to conduct a probe into the incident.

In her FIR, the complainant, Priya Dey of Kanika village, alleged that the SP conducted a raid at her residence to arrest her husband Uttam Dey in connection with July 4 Kanika beat house vandalism incident.

Priya said that the top cop along with other police officials barged into her house and threatened of dire consequences if she did not disclose whereabouts of her husband. She further alleged that the SP misbehaved with her family and also hit her hard in abdomen which led to miscarriage.

Based on the complaint, the SP has been booked with multiple charges including 341 (wrongful restraint), 506 (criminal intimidation), 457 (trespass or house-breaking by night in order to commit offence punishable with imprisonment), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 294 (obscene act in any public place causing annoyance to others), 342, 427, 313 (causing miscarriage without woman’s consent), 166 (public servant disobeying law), 503 and 504 of the IPC.

When contacted, SP Saumya refused to comment on the incident.

On July 3, several residents of Kanika village had blocked the road in front of Kanika police outpost protesting death of a 19-year-old boy in a road accident. Irate locals had ransacked the vehicles inside the beat house and pelted stones at them. Police had identified 13 accused including Priya’s husband Uttam involved in the incident.
