CBI asked former Kolkata commissioner Rajiv Kumar to appear on Saturday

The CBI has summoned former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajiv Kumar to appear on Saturday for questioning in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam.

Officials gave this information on Friday.  The agency sent the summons by the Calcutta High Court on Friday after lifting the ban on his arrest.  Officials said that the team of CBI officers reached Kumar's house to give summons.

Kumar, currently working as Additional Director General of Police (CID), was part of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the state government to investigate the scam along with other chit fund cases.  But the Supreme Court in 2014 referred the case to the CBI.

The Saradha Group of Companies had allegedly defrauded lakhs of people by promising them a high return on investment of Rs 2,500 crore.  It is noteworthy that the High Court, along with lifting the ban on arrest of Kumar, also rejected his demand in which he had sought the cancellation of summons of CBI.
