Chandigarh: 189 traffic challans pending against biker, many issued before he purchased vehicle

Chandigarh: A 21-year-old youth from Chandigarh was shocked to find that he had 189 challans pending against him. The challans were issued between 2017 and 2019. However, what was bizarre was that the youth said that he purchased his motorcycle only about one-and-a-half years ago.

Sanju, a resident of Sector 39, Chandigarh, was stopped by traffic police personnel on July 26 for taking a wrong U-turn at the traffic signal of Sector33-34.

He was issued a challan of Rs 300 fine.

When the challan reached the Chandigarh district court, official records show that there are 189 challans pending against the person's motorcycle. The challans were issued through traffic violation information slips (TVIS) system during the period of 2017-2019.

The man, an employee at an insurance company, said that he never received any information about these challans. What was more surprising for him was that he had bought his two-wheeler about one-and-a-half years ago.

The TVIS challans are issued only the basis of traffic violations caught by the CCTV cameras and the challans are sent on the registered address of the vehicle's owner by post.

In another incident, a Gujarat man escaped a hefty fine even after riding his two-wheeler without a helmet. Zakir Mamon, a fruit shop owner in Bodeli town in Chhota Udaipur district, was stopped by traffic cops for not wearing a helmet. However, when the cops got to know the reason why he was not wearing a helmet, they let him go. Mamon told the cops that he was unable to find a helmet in the market that could fit on his big head.  the police understood his problem and said that he was having all the relevant documents while driving.
