Chandigarh ASI suspended for demanding bribe

MOHALI: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was on Wednesday suspended after he was caught on camera allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a landlord for not framing him in an illicit liquor seizure case.

Gurnam Singh was posted at the Phase I police station.

On August 9, Sarabjeet Singh alias Kaka, a caretaker living on rent in Phase I, was arrested for illegally possessing a box and 200 bottles of liquor.

The plot owner, Arvind Gautam, who runs a security business, said Sarabjit was living on rent for one-and-half years and is an alcoholic.

After two days, Gautam said he came to know Gurnam was planning to mention his name in the FIR. Gautam made one of his friends contact the cop. He kept in touch with the cop for 10 days. The cop then allegedly demanded money. Gautam said he tried to get a statement from the cop on phone about the bribe but failed. He then went and met the cop. Gurnam allegedly demanded Rs 20,000 but the deal was settled at Rs 15,000. Gautam recorded the incident on August 19 and lodged a complaint with the vigilance department. After ascertaining the facts, Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal sent Gurnam Singh to police lines and order his suspension.
