Chandigarh: Cop molests MC worker, arrested

CHANDIGARH: A sub-inspector of Haryana Police was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly molesting a woman in Sector 23.

Sukhwinder Singh (40), a resident of Sector 23, was posted at the Sector 5 police station in Panchkula .

A Sector 25 resident said she was employed as a sanitation worker with the municipal corporation (MC).

Around a month back, she was sweeping the road in Sector 23, when the accused asked her to clean his house. She alleged when she went there, the accused started molesting her. She somehow managed to escape. The woman alleged the accused again called her to his house but she refused.

On Tuesday, the woman told the wife of the accused about the incident. The next day when she reached Sector 23 for her duty, the accused allegedly started abusing her. She informed the police about the incident.

Cops from Sector 17 police station and the mayor, Rajesh Kalia, reached the spot. Later, police recorded the statement of the woman and registered a case under sections 354 ( assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354 A (making sexually coloured remarks) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC against the sub-inspector and arrested him. A court later released him on bail.

However, Madhu Bala, the wife of the accused, claimed her husband was falsely implicated. There was a dispute over cleaning roads and he just told her to clean the area properly, she said.

(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
