Chandigarh department, NGO launch green Diwali campaign

CHANDIGARH: The UT department of environment, in collaboration with NGO Yuvsatta , on Friday launched " Swachh Diwali-Green Diwali " campaign in the city, from Government Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 46D here, with over 2,000 students donning green dupattas taking part in the launch ceremony.

One of the main attractions was participation by artists from Ramlila Committee of Sector 23. Dressed up as Rama, Sita and Laxman, the artists initiated a dialogue with the students and gave them the message to Go Green.

They said for fireworks to go up in the air and explode, several pyrotechnic chemicals (materials capable of undergoing exothermic reactions for the production of heat, light, gas, smoke and/or sound) are used. So, there is an ever-increasing need to create a public opinion in favour of celebrating green Diwali. A street play "Swachh Diwali-Green Diwali " was also organised.

Debendra Dalai, the director of department of environment, motivated students to create an environment where protection of "environment is inbuilt in our behaviours and actions".
