Chanod to get a facelift, better pilgrim facilities

Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board will undertake the exercise at the holy confluence of Orsang, Narmada and Saraswati rivers

The state government has decided to give facelift to Chanod Ghat which stand at the confluence of Orsang, Narmada and subterranean Saraswati rivers.

Chanod, near Vadodara, is one of the important destinations where Hindus conduct last rites of the deceased.

Several accidents take place every year due to overcrowding and lack of infrastructure.

To ensure safety, beauty and cleanliness of the place, Gujarat Pavitra Yatradham Vikas Board has decided to give facelift to the place. Ajay Patel, in-charge secretary of the board, said, "A proposal has been made and it is under consideration."

Sources said the confluence of rivers has huge potential to be developed as a tourist-friendly place of pilgrimage. Under the plan, the ghat will have new washrooms, changing area and smaller steps for benefit of senior citizens. Also, chains will be placed in the river for safety of those taking holy dip.

Sources associated with the development said the ghat will retain its ancient feel even after the facelift. It will have dedicated places to conduct rituals and prayers. Sources said Chanod can become part of the Statue of Unity tourist circuit.
