Chattisgarh: Villagers trek for 6 hours carrying snakebite victim on cot to reach nearest hospital

Raipur: Villagers of a Maoist-affected area trekked for 18 km in order to save a woman's life who was suffering from a snakebite. They carried her for nearly six hours on shoulders on Thursday to reach the nearest hospital.

The victim - Kavasi Lakhmi was bitten by a snake when she went to a jungle near her village.

According to a report, Joga Madvi, a village told the media person that no vehicle can reach their village since it is a Maoist-affected area and deep inside the jungle. As the terrain is also very difficult, they decided to carry the victim on a cot and trekked till the hospital.

Madvi added that they first tried native methods to cure the snake bite but they realised the victim was not recovering and subsequently they decided to take her to Basaguda block hospital. Claiming it was a long way but they had no other option and decided to carry her all the way on a cot.

Reportedly, it took the villagers six hours on foot to reach the hospital. Another villager added that they are used to walking this much as no vehicle ever comes near their area and they always ferry if someone's life is in danger.

The villagers claimed that the woman was shivering, her eyes were half-closed and her breathing was fast when she was brought to Basaguda block hospital. Seeing her condition, the hospital staff immediately shifted her to Bijapur district hospital. BR Pujari, Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO), Bijapur told media that the patient was in serious condition when she was brought to the hospital. After providing the required treatment, the victim is now out of danger and recovering in the facility.

The incident highlights the grim reality of Maoist-affected areas and lack of facilities for the residents.
