Chennai: 17-year-old who eloped with girl, 16, held under Pocso Act

CHENNAI: The Siva Kanchi police in Kancheepuram arrested a 17-year-old boy for eloping with a 16-year-old girl, promising to marry her. The boy was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act and sent to a correctional home in Chengalpet.

The girl had discontinued her studies after Class X to financially support her family.

She worked with the boy at a private firm in Kancheepuram and was in a relationship with him.

In January, the girl did not return from work one day. When her parents inquired at the firm, they were told that their daughter had not come to work that day. They lodged a complaint at the Siva Kanchi police station.

It was only when the police were made aware that a boy from the same firm had also gone missing the same day, that their relationship came to light.

The boy’s parents, too, lodged a missing complaint at the same station.

Based on a tip, police traced them to Ariyalur, where the two were living as a couple. Police brought them to Kancheepuram and arrested the boy. The girl was sent to a government home. Further investigations are on.
