Chennai-Kollam Express gets a facelift

Chennai: In a bid to improve passenger amenities and offer better travel comfort inside trains , Southern Railway has introduced refurbished beige-maroon Utkrisht coaches on the Chennai Egmore-Kollam Express via Sengottai. This is the third train to get a facelift.

The zone will introduce similar coaches on Puratchi Thalaivar MGR Central–Mysuru Kaveri Express in the first week in July.

The Egmore-Kollam Express train will have 14 upgraded Utkrisht coaches including two AC III tier coaches, eight sleeper class coaches, two second class general compartments and two luggage-cum-brake vans.

The coaches are painted with environment-friendly anti-graffiti paint and are fitted with LED tube lights, dustbins in toilets, basin-cum-dustbins in AC coaches, said a press release.

The bio-toilets will consume less water and have auto-janitors to spray air-freshener regularly. This prevents odour inside the coaches.

The coaches were refurbished by replacing the panels on the doorway and gangway areas.

An epoxy coating on the floor and new upholstery for seats are other modifications done. The fixtures in the toilets have a hydrophobic coating which will repel water molecules and prevent washbasins and closets from getting wet.

This will be the third rake for Southern Railway. The first one was introduced for Chennai Egmore-Sengottai Silabmbu Express in February and the second one was in May for Tambaram-Nagercoil Tri-weekly Express.
