Chennai mall hosting terracotta and Madhubani mela

CHENNAI: Jewellery, cane artefacts, wooden statues, painted pots, terracotta trinkets, paintings, brass products… the ongoing handicraft mela at Phoenix MarketCity has all these and more on offer.

With the shopping festival on in full swing at the city mall , the entire place is now lined with craftspeople from across the country.

Expect to find wooden toys from the south jostling beside dupattas and jhoothis or chappals from Kashmir and colourful pieces of jewellery featuring unique works of arts and crafts by skilled artisans.

Madhubani paintings are also on display. Madhubani art (or mithila paintings) are works of art done with a variety of tools, including fingers, twigs and matchsticks, usually depicting scenes of birth or marriage, and festivals, such as Holi and Durga Puja.

Though traditionally done on mud walls and floors of huts, you will find the paintings on sale here.

The craft mela is on till Sunday (July 21).
