Chhattisgarh: IPS officer helps stranded women in Delhi return home

RAIPUR: “How scary it is to be left by your people at a place far from home and you don't dare to walk down either, in fear of getting caned by police? I am relieved to be back to my state though having no penny, no grain of food and no job," said a 23-year-old woman whose two month struggle to return home has finally come to an end.

Clueless whom to seek help from and how to return home, two Chhattigarh women working as labourers stuck in Delhi after being fired from the job and abandoned by labourers' group, have returned home with the efforts of Bilaspur inspector general of police. IG Dipanshu Kabra got information about women stranded via Twitter and has been personally dealing with similar cases coming through social media.

Speaking to TOI, IG Kabra said, "I saw a post on Twitter by someone in Delhi seeking support for two women hailing from Pandariya in Chhattisgarh. The women had no idea how to come back when there's no train or help available. Their group of about 20 people from Chhattisgarh abandoned them by making their own arrangements. Like in all other cases, I initiated to arrange tickets for them to board the train from Delhi to Bilaspur and other logistics required."

It comes as a relief to assist someone reach their home, they had been longing for Kabra said.

Life for Meena Tondon and her mother Nageshwar,46, seemed fine after they got jobs at a construction site in Delhi and they managed to pay school fees for their young boy. But since the day of lockdown, uncertainties crept in and their job was gone.

Presently, at a quarantine centre in Kabirdham, Meena told TOI over phone, "Am thankful we are on our land at least. I don't have a penny or any food to eat but that fear of insecurity and uncertainty is gone. When I mustered courage to walk down to Chhattisgarh like others did, stories of police's beating sent down shivers and I couldn't dare go out. Staying alone at a slum, a local person gave some ration and contact police here."

Once we reach home after 14 days of quarantine, we look forward to getting some work for livelihood.

Bilaspur IG along with his team has been active on social media to address people's distress calls and need going beyond borders of districts, divisions or states.

Understanding the gravity of the matter that involved women, Kabra follows up the case with his team and as and when required to speak to officials.

In similar incidents, a bunch of girls from Ladakh who were stuck in Raipur tweeted seeking help to return home and Kabra assisted them with a Traveller vehicle to Nagpur for their further journey. Subsequently, delivering medicines via Rail Setu app from other cities, helping migrant workers reach homes, a Kota student was sick and was provided a vehicle to reach his home in Rajnandgaon.
