Chhattisgarh: Wanted deputy Maoist commander carrying cash reward of Rs 8 lakh surrenders

RAIPUR: A Maoist commander carrying cash rewad of Rs 8 lakh on his head surrendered on Thursday in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh . He was deputy commander of platoon number 24 and was involved in deadly ambush laid against security forces including Burkapal attack that killed 25 CRPF jawans in 2016.

According to Dantewada SP Abhishek Pallava said that Pradeep alias Bhima Kunjam, deputy commander of platoon number 24 surrendered on Thursday before the police expressing that he was extremely disappointed with hollow ideologies of Maoists and wished to surrender.

Kunjam was carrying cash reward of Rs 8 lakh on his head and was involved in several attacks on security forces."

A team of police officials have been working on ground level to persuade Maoists to surrender and join the mainstream. Cops have
been in touch with villagers and sending out messages to Maoists about better life after surrender and secured job in police.
Kunjam, a resident of Aranpur region told police that he was inspired by the state's surrender policy, thus decided to surrender.
Records show that Kunjam was involved in triggering IED and killing three police personnel in Kirandul region on June 26, 2011 when a police party was out on patrolling.

In 2012, he was involved in blowing up an anti-landmine vehicle at Mandeda canal. He was also involved in triggering bomb blast blowing up a patrolling vehicle of CISF in May 2012 in Kirandul. The blast killed one civilian and five CISF jawans. Kunjam played one of the key roles in Burkapal ambush in April 2016 that killed 25 CRPF jawans.

Kunjam had joined Maoist ranks in 2008 as Malangir LOS member and later underwent training for mobile interception, repairing of radio, wireless sets etc. He was also close to senior Maoist leaders like Ganesh Uikey and has worked for them. Later in 2017, he was posted as deputy commander in Malangir Area platoon number 24. He was carrying cash reward of Rs 8 lakh.
