Children kick and punch each other in savage mass brawl at all-boys school

Shocking footage captures a fight at an all-boys school after one youngster was rushed to hospital in separate violence.

At least seven youngsters at St Boniface's Catholic College in Plymouth, Devon, were said to have been involved in the brawl.

The clip, which has been edited but was almost one minute long, shows a boy on the floor, as at least two others appear to be kicking him.

Paramedics rushed a child to hospital after he was said to have been hurt in a separate altercation on Tuesday.

One mum told Plymouth Live says it highlights a bullying problem at the school.

Another parent said pupils "seem to be out of control" at St Boniface's, which was rated as "inadequate" by Ofsted at its last inspection.

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service Foundation Trust said: "SWASFT [South Western Ambulance Service Foundation Trust], were called at just after 1.50pm yesterday to an incident at Boniface College.

"One male patient was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken onto hospital for further treatment."

But a spokesman for the school said: "This footage of a grievance spilling out into the playground and ending up in a fight is both shocking and distressing on many levels, but we will not let the minority involved undermine the solid reputation of our student body as a whole.

"Although we praise the action of the teachers who quickly intervened to diffuse the situation, we are saddened by the fact that it has been aired on social media.

"We welcome the debate that will undoubtedly follow whilst we resolve the matter privately with all parties concerned and instigate further staff training to avoid similar incidents arising in the future.

"What the video doesn’t show, however, is that the majority of St Boniface students who are well behaved, tolerant of others, kind and exhibit self-control at all times – they don’t want to be tarnished with the same brush."

St Boniface's Catholic College, founded as a independent boarding school in 1856 but now a comprehensive, caters for more than 500 pupils aged 11 to 18.

The school said: "Our school is not a prison. Our teachers are not prison guards. We have strict codes of conduct, rigorous rules for behaviour and our approach is to exclude or permanently remove any child who flouts them.

"This incident was thoroughly and swiftly investigated, the main aggressors were held accountable for their actions, appropriate disciplinary action was taken and the full force of our bullying and behaviour policy was enforced.

"The safety of our students will always remain a top priority and we will continue to take matters of this nature extremely seriously.

"This footage acts as a stark reminder that good behaviour needs to be reinforced in the home as well as on school grounds.

"It also highlights the need to discuss with children the importance of reporting any concerns so that they can be dealt with appropriately, effectively and in the strictest of confidence."

But one mum said: "The school don't deal with bullying proactively. It is shocking, there are lots of excuses. They give a lot of lip service, but they don't ever follow through."

She added that her child was subject to "daily verbal and emotional" abuse and was called "really rude obscene names".

She said: "They were constantly trying to instigate fights, pushing and fights. It's hugely concerning."

Another parent added: "We have had many occasions of my son being bullied by them. Tripped up, punched, spat at, strangled in the underpass. Yet the school didn’t seem that interested.

"His tutor would say she had tried phoning us, but the number didn’t work, although the number would work perfectly if they called to tell me he was sick.

"We were told that my son and his friends were being kept in at break times for their safety. I couldn’t believe this. They were being penalised, yet they were the ones being picked on.

"I have applied for a school elsewhere, but my son is on a huge waiting list. It’s not nice sending your son to school in an almost depressive state, but you have no choice. There are a lot of bullies at St Boniface's, but no one is interested."
