China fights coronavirus pandemic: Wuhan authorities urge vigilance after city restarts

Wuhan authorities urged its residents not to leave their neighborhoods, their city and Hubei Province where Wuhan is the capital unless necessary, as the city lifted lockdown from Wednesday.

From midnight, Wuhan, the central Chinese city hard-hit by the novel coronavirus outbreak, lifted outbound travel restrictions, dismantled traffic control checkpoints, and resumed operation of railways, airports, waterways, highways and buses in an orderly way, according to a statement issued by the provincial COVID-19 control headquarters on Tuesday.

However, the statement warned that zero cases do not mean zero risks and lifting travel restrictions does not mean lifting prevention and control measures. It asked residential communities to continue closed-off management, and residents passing through communities' entries to have temperatures checked and wear a mask.

Shopping malls, supermarkets, parks and hospitals which have reopened should strictly control visitor number and check their temperature to avoid cross infections, while all schools in Hubei Province will continue to delay openings until further notice, the statement said.

On Jan. 23, Wuhan declared unprecedented traffic restrictions, including suspending the city's public transport and all outbound flights and trains, in an attempt to contain the epidemic.
