City among top 10 winners of 'Sheher Green Karo' contest

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and environment NGO, Green Vigil Foundation , have been declared as one of the winners of ‘Sheher Green Karo Contest’ which was organized by Earth Day network in April this year.

About 49 cities having population over one million participated in the pan-India contest, whose main aim was to motivate people to compete and make their city ‘swachh’ and ‘green’.

The contest was based on efforts taken to clean and beautify the city, manage waste, sustain resources, add to the green cover, reduce carbon emissions, shift to renewable energies, protect our species and others.

The city has made it to the ten winning cities for “relentless efforts being taken for a greener and cleaner Nagpur city.”

Constant observance of Poornima Diwas Campaign, advocating energy saving, reducing carbon emission, shift towards renewable energy sources and natural resource conservation have been major breakthrough for the contest.

“Efforts to maintain green cover of Nagpur by keeping a check on rampant illegal tree felling, mega project of de-choking trees introducing a Simple Operating Procedure, making illegal tree felling (even a branch) extremely difficult and permission contingent on compensatory plantation, reviving a 150-year-old banyan and other awareness programmes were highlighted in the contest,” said founder of Green Vigil Kaustav Chatterjee.
